Despite having all the opportunities to go for an outright win, Bengal let Orissa escape with a draw in their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match which concluded at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. After taking a first-innings lead of 214 runs, Bengal chose to muster another big total in the in the second innings.
Finally when they declared their second innings at 313 for nine, there was little time to bowl out the home time for the second time and clinch victory. Chasinga massive target of 528, Orissa reached 43 for three in the second innings when the match ended in a dull draw on the final day.
Earlier, Bengal declared their first innings at 348 for six after captain Arun Lal won the toss and opted to bat. Indu Bhusan Roy, Arun Lal and Joydeep Mukherjee hit a half-century each for Bengal. In reply, Orissa were bundled out for 134. Devashish Mahanti saved the hosts from a complete collapse, scoring 51 runs.
In the second innings of Bengal, Arun Lal and stumper Sambaran Banerjee notched a half-century apiece. Among Orissa bowlers, Pawan Agarwal bagged a career-best five for 111, while Mahipal Saudagar claimed three for 48.
